The Wiese Foundation organizes V International Colloquium: Policies and Management of Collections in Peru. Training, balance and perspectives

The Central Andes, to a large extent the territory that modern Peru encompasses, have been, like very few places in the world, a privileged setting for social developments notable for their degree of complexity and profuse historical legacy.

As a result of successive occupations that occurred from 15,000 BCE approx., The amount of cultural material inherited by the Peruvian Nation is immeasurable and its characteristics are diverse and complex; Its proper management, therefore, represents a great challenge and at the same time a unique development opportunity for our country.

Unfortunately, the great quantity and wealth of pre-Hispanic material culture is proportional to the systematic looting to which the historical heritage has been subjected over several centuries. This practice, together with excavations carried out within the framework of various scientific research projects and contract archeology, has resulted in the formation of large collections of materials that are usually housed in private collections, warehouses and museums.

This International Colloquium proposes to discuss the origin, current situation and possibilities of the archaeological collections in the country. It aims to set up a meeting and reflection point where efforts aimed at proposing policies and strategies for the proper management of the aforementioned collections are discussed and articulated, understanding them as a means capable of contributing significantly to promoting citizenship and generating critical thinking; as a means to generate social development.

For this, thematic tables are proposed that will address the different aspects involved in the management of archaeological collections. The exhibitions and the subsequent discussion around the theme of each table, will be in charge of outstanding professionals, who, based on their valuable experiences in their respective areas of specialty, will shed light on the potential and challenges faced by archaeological collections in our country.

The event will take place on August 23 of this year, at the Casa Andina Hotel in Trujillo and on August 24 at the El Brujo Archaeological Complex, to finally close the activities that same day with a celebration prepared jointly with the Magdalena community. of Cao.
