  • Wiese Foundation will present the book "Lambayeque Funerary Bundles in El Brujo" at FIL 2023

The Wiese Foundation and the Economic Culture Fund announce the launch of the book "Lambayeque Funerary Bundles in El Brujo. Catalog of the Collection" that presents the cultural legacy of the funerary bundles of the El Brujo Archaeological Complex. Within the framework of the International Book Fair, we will do the official presentation of this book, written by Rubén Buitron, head of the laboratory of the El Brujo Archaeological Complex. The date scheduled for this event is Thursday, July 27.

Funerary bundling has been a common funerary practice in the Andean region, especially in ancient Peru. The first evidence of systematic coating of the deceased with fabrics dates back to Pueblo 1 in Chilca, the Tres Ventanas Cave in Huarochiri and Los Gavilanes in the Huarmey Valley. Over time, this practice became more complex and developed significantly during the Paracas, Wari and Inca epochs. The production of a funerary bundle required a great deal of work and knowledge of highly technologies developed for the time.

The purpose of this edition of the book is to make known to the general public the valuable cultural legacy represented by the collection of funerary bundles of the El Brujo Archaeological Complex. This collection is composed of 142 specimens from a cemetery of the Lambayeque period, located in the remains of the famous Mochica temple of Cao Viejo, dating between the eleventh and twelfth centuries AD.

"Lambayeque Funerary Bundles in El Brujo. Catalog of the Collection" orders and classifies the evidence found, records photographically each specimen with a high level of detail, under appropriate scientific and ethical criteria, and opens new research directions for the study of the pre-Hispanic funeral practices.
