Open Museums is an outstanding initiative of the Ministry of Culture of Peru, created under Law 30599. This State policy allows Peruvian citizens to enjoy free access to museums, archaeological sites and historical places every first Sunday of the month. Its main objective is to promote universal access to culture and promote the recognition of the country's valuable historical and cultural heritage.

What does Open Museums include?

The proposal not only includes free visits to museums administered by the State, but also has the participation of private entities, thus expanding the cultural offer for the public. Aside from the waiver of the entrance fee, many museums offer complementary activities such as:

  • Artisanal fairs.
  • Art exhibitions.
  • Theatrical performances.
  • Talks and educational workshops.

These activities are usually free or low-cost and represent an excellent opportunity to learn and enjoy them with the family. It is advisable to check out the museums' social media or websites to find out about the specific events of each edition.

El Brujo: A unique destination within the framework of Open Museums

The El Brujo archaeological complex, located in Ascope, in La Libertad, actively participates in the Open Museums initiative. Every first Sunday of the month, it opens its doors free of charge so that visitors may enjoy a unique experience at this site filled with history and culture.

El Brujo is made up of three impressive huacas: Huaca Cao Viejo, Huaca Cortada and Huaca Prieta. Moreover, its Site Museum offers a fascinating journey through more than 14,000 years of history, highlighting the cultural richness of the men and women who inhabited this region.

What does El Brujo offer in Open Museums?

In addition to free access, El Brujo offers a varied range of activities designed for the whole family:

  • Free guide and audio guide: An excellent way to learn about the history and main finds of the complex.
  • Live shows: Performances by local artists and bands.
  • Free thematic micro-workshops: Delve into the fascinating world of archaeology by exploring the storage depots of historical pieces, visiting the research laboratory and creating a unique handicraft souvenir to remember your experience.
  • Interactive handicrafts for children: Manual activities to create your own Lady of Cao Funko or customize an Ai Apaec mask.
